Does teeth whitening damage the teeth?

No. Teeth whitening is a completely safe procedure, that will not cause any damage to your teeth and gums. It doesn’t wear off or remove any of the tooth structure. In the end, you will end up with a beautiful smile and whiter teeth!

How does teeth whitening work?

A peroxide based product, when in contact with the tooth surface, reacts with the pigments of the teeth to change the colour and produce a bleached effect (similar to  bleaching your hair) and whitening your teeth. There are two different types of peroxides used for dental whitening, carbamide peroxide and hydrogen peroxide. Each are available in different concentrations, depending on the desired result.

2. Professional home whitening

For home whitening treatments, Dr Patricia Vivaldi takes a 3D scan of your teeth and manufactures a custom-made silicone whitening tray, where you will apply the whitening gel and wear it for the recommended amount of time, depending on the type of product and concentration. The custom-made home teeth whitening kits ensure that the whitening gel touches the teeth evenly and not the gums (which can cause irritation). Home whitening options involve: A. Day-white: the gel and trays are used for 30 to 45 minutes per day with a hydrogen peroxide product B. Night-white: the gel and trays are used overnight with a carbamide peroxide product The results achieved with the home whitening are expected to last 6 to 12 months, depending on diet and habits. After that, a top up can easily be done at home, using the original trays.

3. Professional “in-chair” whitening

This dental treatment is performed by Dr Patricia Vivaldi in the surgery and needs professional supervision, as it uses a high concentration of hydrogen peroxide, to provide instant results. A protective barrier is applied to the gums and all soft tissues are isolated and protected, to prevent contact with the bleaching agent. Then the whitening gel is applied over the teeth and activated by a LED light, for 15 minutes. This process is repeated 3 to 4 times and the whole procedure takes around 90 minutes. Some temporary sensitivity can be expected after the in-chair session, which subsides within 24 hours. On average, teeth get to 2-3 shades lighter after one session. The results from in-chair whitening can be complemented with home whitening. At Vivaldi Smile Artisans we offer Phillips Zoom whitening technology for “in chair” whitening treatments.

Frequently Asked Questions About Teeth Whitening in Sydney

How much does teeth whitening cost in Sydney?

At Vivaldi Smile Artisans, custom take-home whitening is $410 and in-chair whitening starts from $690. Your options and exact cost are confirmed at your consultation.

What is the difference between in-chair and take-home whitening?

In-chair whitening (from $690) is completed at the practice for noticeable results in a single visit. Take-home whitening ($410) uses custom-made trays and professional gel you wear at home for gradual improvement over a couple of weeks. Many patients combine the two: in-chair to start, take-home trays to maintain.

How long does professional teeth whitening take?

It depends on the treatment you choose. In-chair whitening with Philips Zoom takes around 90 minutes and delivers immediate results. Professional home whitening is more gradual, with most patients completing their treatment over a few weeks using their custom trays.

Who is a good candidate for teeth whitening?

Most adults with healthy teeth and gums are suitable candidates for professional teeth whitening. Teeth whitening works best on natural tooth enamel and is less effective on crowns, veneers, or bonding. Dr Patricia will assess your smile during your consultation and recommend the most appropriate option for your situation.

Is professional whitening safe?

Yes, when provided by clinicians using regulated concentrations and custom-fitted application. Some patients notice temporary sensitivity, which we manage and which settles quickly.

Will teeth whitening make my teeth sensitive?

Some patients experience mild, temporary sensitivity during or after treatment, particularly following an in-chair session. This typically resolves within 24 hours. Dr Patricia takes care to protect your gums and soft tissues throughout the procedure, and home whitening options use gentler concentrations that tend to be well tolerated.

How long do teeth whitening results last?

Results vary depending on your diet, habits, and the type of treatment used. Home whitening results generally last between six and twelve months, and touch-ups are easy to do using your original custom trays. In-chair results can be extended by combining them with a home whitening programme.

How long do whitening results last?

It varies with your habits: coffee, tea, red wine and smoking shorten results, while good oral care extends them. Take-home trays make it easy to top up over time.

Does whitening work on fillings, crowns or veneers?

No. Whitening changes natural tooth enamel only; existing restorations keep their shade. If you are planning bonding or veneers, we usually whiten first and match the new work to your brighter shade.

How much does cosmetic dentistry cost?

As a guide from our published pricing: whitening from $410, composite bonding $410 to $600 per tooth, composite veneers around $780 per tooth and porcelain veneers around $2,100 per tooth. See our smile makeover cost guide for the full breakdown; your exact quote follows your consultation.
