Single Visit Dentistry – Cerec
Dr Patricia Vivaldi has been using her specialised dental artistic skills to transform smiles for over 20 years! What is Cerec?

1. Scanning
After the tooth is cleaned and “prepared” to the proper shape to receive the restoration, a 3D scanner is used to create an exact copy of the tooth on the computer. This process completely replaces the uncomfortable impressions/moulds previously used with the traditional methods to fabricate ceramic restorations.

2. Designing
With a precise copy of the tooth on the computer screen, Dr Patricia then designs the restoration, taking into consideration your bite as well as the position and shape of the adjacent teeth. Her aim is for the ceramic tooth to look as real as possible and blend in with the natural dentition.

Once the design is finished, Dr Patricia will choose the shade for the ceramic to match your teeth. The ceramic block is then sent to a milling unit, which cuts the porcelain to the exact shape that was designed by Dr Patricia. With the newest “Primemill” technology used at Vivaldi Smile Artisans, this process takes no longer than 10 minutes!

4. Bonding
After the milling process is finished, Dr Patricia will “try-in” the restoration to make any necessary adjustments. Once this is done, the restoration is prepared and polished for bonding. A special tooth-coloured cement is used to bond the porcelain to the tooth structure, providing perfect sealing and strength.

At the final stage of Cerec, Dr Patricia will make sure that the restoration fits perfectly in your bite and with the neighbouring teeth. The whole process takes an average of 90 minutes for ceramic restorations and two hours for a crown.

What are the advantages of Cerec?
There are many advantages of Cerec and single-visit dentistry, compared to traditional methods. These includes:- No need for impressions and moulds, which can be very uncomfortable for some, especially those patients with strong gag reflexes.
- Having local anaesthetics only once (not twice), extremely beneficial for needle phobic patients.
- No need for a temporary crown/ restoration while the ceramic is fabricated by the laboratory, which normally would take 2-3 weeks.
- The precision of 3D scanning is superior to traditional impressions, which gives the restoration a much better fit.
- The fabrication process happens while the patient is still in the chair, therefore adjustments can be easily done by the dentist, on the spot.
