What is laser dentistry?

Laser stands for “light amplification by the stimulated emission of radiation.”

Dental laser instruments create light energy in a specific wavelength that can be absorbed through water and haemoglobin (present in the red blood cells), to react with soft tissues.

Dental lasers first became commercially available to be used in clinical dental practice in 1989. They revolutionised dental treatment and have been used extensively since.

The most common uses of soft tissue dental laser are:

Treatment of “gummy smile” and gum contouring

Gummy smiles are when too much gum tissue covers the tooth structure. Lasers are used to reshape and remove the excess gum tissue exposing more of the tooth structure. This is the main cause and treatment for gummy smiles.

Another very popular use of soft tissue laser is to recontour and even the gum heights on front teeth when they are not symmetrical on both sides of the arch. Laser can be used to improve the gum symmetry, by removing gum tissue and cauterizing it at the same time, with fast and predictable healing. This procedure is particularly beneficial in conjunction with other aesthetic procedures, such as porcelain veneers and crowns, for perfect and symmetrical gum lines.

Removal of tongue and lip ties

Laser can be used as a much better alternative to the traditional scalpel method to remove thick or tight frenulum. This procedure is called a “frenectomy” and can be done to remove the upper lip frenulum (that causes “diastemas” or gaps between the top front teeth) and under the tongue to release tongue ties.

Removal of soft tissue lesions and benign tumours

Lasers can be used to remove lesions and tumours from the palate, gums, and sides of the lips and cheeks through a painless and suture-free method.

Treatment of cold sores

By applying the laser beam over the cold sore lesion, pain can be reduced and healing time minimised.

What are the benefits of using laser?

There are many benefits of using dental laser including:

  • The elimination of the use of sutures due to its cauterising action.
  • Minimal or no pain and downtime after a procedure.
  • Minimal or no bleeding in treated soft tissues, as the laser promotes blood clotting.
  • With some procedures, local anaesthetics are not needed.
  • Reduced chance of post-operative infections, as the laser sterilizes the area.
  • Faster healing of wounds.
  • Sealing of nerve endings and blood vessels, minimising post-op pain and improving healing.
